Surprise Day 9

Closer Francisco Cordero has announced that he will skip the World Baseball Classic due to a sore shoulder. I think Cordero made the right call in this situation. If his shoulder was bothering him, he shouldn't risk further injury be pitching in competitive games just a couple of weeks before the season starts. Cordero has actually been feeling stronger the last few days, but thankfully he will not participate in the tournament.

The Rangers tried out a new drill in camp on Thursday. The pitchers threw to live hitters, but the hitters were not allowed to swing the bat. Pitching coach Mark Connor said that the point of the drill was to get the pitchers used to throwing to a real hitter without the pitchers worrying about getting out of the way of line drives.

Two relievers returning from Tommy John surgery are making strides. Frank Francisco threw a bullpen session, and Ryan Bukvich is way ahead of schedule. Though neither player will be on the roster on opening day, each one is eyeing a midseason return.

These comments cover several postings to the blog since my last comments. First of all I am glad that Cadero is not going to the World conference, and I am glad that he has started pitching off the mound. There seems to be a glut of good outfielders which will give the opportunity to pick the best hitters to fill the left and right field positions. Lack of injuries certainly is to the team benefit. Maybe we will be able to start this season real strong and have the ability to use our depth when injuries occur during the season.--Gdad
